Pet resto opens in San Juan

Good news to pet owners, a restaurant that caters to pets and their humans now exists in San Juan.

I'm fond of bringing Princess along with me whenever I can, but dining out more often than not proves to be a problem. Most restos don't allow pets inside their establishment which means I have to find one with al fresco dining and endure the heat outside.

And then there's also the problem of Princess barking or looking at me with that "paawa" look while I eat.

But then those living in San Juan near Whole Pet Kitchen are so lucky because the newly-opened resto serves both pets and humans!

According to GMA News, "the restaurant serves foods made with human-grade ingredients, which are both edible for humans and their pets."

This is something every commercial area needs, no? So we can bond with our pets more often.

Accordingto their Facebook page, "Whole Pet Kitchen: Pet Deli & Bark-ery is the 1st natural pet bakery and dog cafe in the Philippines that provides a great selection of natural, homemade pet food and treats that are healthy and free of harmful preservatives, colors and flavors."

They serve "Muffins, Pupcakes, Pet Pastries, Biscotti, Savory dishes and Biscuits made with premium, all-natural ingredients that are safe for pets."

Thet are open Monday-Friday at 10 am-6 pm, and weekends at 9 am-9 pm.

Whole Pet Kitchen: Pet Deli & Bark-ery is located at 349-D C.M. Recto St. Brgy. Addition Hills, San Juan.

Dog rescued in Brooklyn (VIDEO)

A chow chow trapped on a second floor window ledge got rescued by the FDNY. It’s a big dog and the fireman seemed a little scared, but he successfully rescued the furry pet to the delight of onlookers.

I wonder, though, how the dog got there and where the heck was his owner.

Anyway, good thing there are friendly firefighters out where he lives. I wonder what our local rescue would tell us if we called for a dog trapped on the ledge.

How Not To Greet A Dog

You might be fond of dogs and love touching every cute furry friend you meet. But how do you approach them? Do you present yourself to them in a way that they consider friendly?

Trouble with malfunctioning machine

It was irritating that I traveled all the way from Taguig to Alabang with my dog because Animal House-Alabang was supposed to have a lab… and then not.

Princess

I knew something’s wrong with Princess yesterday because she wouldn’t eat her treat, so I wanted to have CBC done to know exactly what the problem was. In AH-Alabang, the vet collected blood samples (which she did thrice because the first two attempts were unsuccessful). But When she was already running the CBC, she told me the machine malfunctioned and that she’d just call me later that day for the results. The technician, according to her, will arrive a little later.

Darn, right? I traveled that far for nothing. I could’ve just gone to Animal House-Bicutan, which doesn’t have a lab but is so near my place, had I known I wouldn’t get the results right away. Same process, Bicutan would also phone me the results afterwards, but less trouble traveling and less time consumed.

Can’t Alabang have a backup machine? I remember the same incident has happened to me in the same establishment some two years ago. A lot of pet owners I know only rely on Animal House-Alabang and Animal House-Makati for their pets’ lab tests. Would it really hurt to have a backup?  They have a lot of clients, for goodness’ sake. Investing in another machine would make their service better.

Anyway, Princess’ temp was 40. After the three ‘tusok’ for blood sample, it became 40.5. She’s okay now, though. Not as enthusiastic for the treat like two days ago, but at least she eats it already.

And the vet just called in to tell me Princess’ platelets have again went down to 120. Normal is 200-500. I have to give her Vibravet for three weeks.

How to take care of animals?

Bugoy Cariño will teach us how to take care of animals in ABS-CBN’s Wansapanataym this Saturday night.

Bugoy Cariño

The episode is called ‘Finding Nilo’ (sounds familiar?). He plays the role of Nilo, a child cursed to become a fish after stepping on a certain kind of sea creature believed to be the guardian of the sea (who cannot take care of himself?).

Anyway, I’m very pet friendly that I can’t help but post this.

Wansapanataym airs Saturdays, after Kapamilya Deal Or No Deal, on ABS-CBN.

Celebs with Dogs: Daniel Matsunaga

I nearly cried looking at this collage of Daniel and his dog Simba. He's saying goodbye to the dog as he was leaving for Iloilo.

Reminds me of Princess's stares, and how she won't kiss me whenever she sees me with my backpack.

This is the first time she looked straight at the DSLR, when she doesn’t have any problem staring at the digicam. She’s quite afraid of the DSLR lens, but I guess not anymore.

Princess gets freebies

After being a regular client for four years, Princess got freebies this afternoon from Animal House!

DSC_1013

Yay! Free Denta Stix that was handed to me upon buying Princess’ weekly supplies this afternoon!

But that’s after a gazillion of canned Science Diet (Princess has been consuming 1 can in 2 days for 2 years and 5 months already), packs of Denta Stix (1 85g pack every week for 2 years and 5 months as well), a lot of grooming sessions, 1 confinement, lotsa check-ups, and lots of laboratory tests.

Each of the free Denta Stix pack contains 1 thin stick. So we got three free thin sticks. Hurray!

Bulag

I love dogs, and dogs everywhere seem to love me, too.

DSC_0322

I was in Pagbilao last Wednesday to revisit my favorite secluded beach Kwebang Lampas. As the caretaker opened the gate, a local white dog came out of the gate to welcome me. No barking. Just a quiet but nevertheless warm welcome of circling around me and sniffing me with no threat at all.

Her name was Bulag (blind), taken from her right eye that couldn’t see. I also think there’s something wrong with the right side of her face as her right ear was smaller and her nose was slightly upturned to the right. I don’t remember seeing her during my first visit, though.

Alone I might be that time, but Bulag didn’t leave me one bit – stayed not so far while I was swimming, went with me as I walked along the beach, waited patiently while I took pictures, and posed for me when I wanted to take a picture of her.

I think the highlight of our meeting was when I gave her one of the two chicken legs I brought for lunch, which she happily ate. Then she stole the gravy container, perhaps noticing that I haven’t touched it at all.

What’s so touching for me, however, was when she walked me to the waiting boat some half kilometers away from the resort’s gate.

I scratched her nape to say goodbye before hopping on the small boat. But she didn’t leave the shore just yet. She just stood there and watched as the boat took me away.

Dog behaviors defined

Princess is turning 5 tomorrow. I was planning to walk her at MoA but I’m not so sure anymore. I feel sick, triggered by the long ordinary bus ride last night from Pagbilao to Alabang.

Speaking of dogs, I found this News To Go feature on dog behaviors.

It’s a behavior problem pala when your dog/s jump around and bark when you get home.

Fukushima pets need to be rescued

Pet owners in Fukushima had to leave their homes during last year's nuclear crisis. Sadly, they could bring with them as much, leaving the pets behind.

Animal welfare groups were allowed to enter the area around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant last December to rescue the pets who had to suffer high radiation, severe lack of food and extreme winter weather.

So far, the United Kennel Club of Japan has rescued 290 cats and 34 dogs from the region. But there are still many of them left out in the cold. Animal footprints were reported to be seen in the snow. These animals are fighting to survive.

Unlike the well-fed pets, starving animals cannot keep themselves warm because they little to no body fat left. They cold would eventually kill them.

Many of the pet owners go back to their radiation tainted home every now and then with hopes that their pets have returned. One man even leaves food for his cat saying, "I just want my cat to be alive."

It has been 10 months since the earthquake that struck Japan has resulted into a tsunami and nuclear meltdown. But we can never blame the government. They had to save the people first, we understand.

This makes me want to hug my dogs. We're very, very lucky we're not in that situation.

My heart goes out to all the dogs and cats left starving in the cold, and to the pet owners whose hearts, I'm sure, are still breaking until now.

May all those pets who have not survived rest in peace, and those that are still alive be immediately rescued.

PS
I'm literally crying while writing this.

This is Wendy, one of my two local dogs. She's 2 months younger than Princess.

And yes, those are green eyes. So lazy I didn't fix it anymore.

She's named after Wendy Valdez cuz Nanay and I were big fans of PBB. Her sister was named Beauty, after Beauty Gonzales. And their mother, who passed away soon after giving birth, was named Keanna. And yes, you guessed it right. Named after Keanna Reeves.

Haha!
